As this dinosaur is finally laid to a long overdue rest the bbc asks the question
here

My own answer was it taught me not to bother trying to watch tv early evening on a sunday. Just like Big Brother has taught me not to bother watching channel 4 during the summer months and the pointlessness of watching saturday evening tv when x factor/britain's got talent/whichever BBC talent show in running.

I remember watching LOTSW when I was a kid but then I also often watched songs of praise too, why because I was a kid and this was tv and if I kept really quiet my parents might forget I was there and not make me go to bed. In hindsight I think I made the wrong call.

So has anyone a case for the defence of this insipid and patronising representation of both the North and old people. My grandparents lived and were from Golcar and I never saw anything that remotely echoed with the dire 'comedy' show aside from the houses and landscape.

Maybe the first series should have been the last, those early episodes epitomised what some older gentlemen like to get up to, I can vouch for that. What did we learn? your never too old to have a good time regardless.

I did the same, but my mum and dad let us stay up and watch Sunday Night at the London Palladium before bed, which I'm sure was on after Songs of Praise.

I preferred the behind-the-scenes LOTSW Extras show on BBC3...they showed how they chose the right kind of bath, how they got the three men in a bath, how they sent the bath hurtling down the hill, bath insurance, bath-related guests. I used to watch it on Sunday night just after bath-time.

Why would anyone take a comedy show so seriously? I would much rather watch re-runs of LOTSW than the crap that is put on TV today in the name of entertainment.

Pete, is your answer in the family of hypothetical answers such as would you choose drinking a pint full of your own piss or small glass of someone else's?

I'm sure there have been crap TV shows since TV was invented.

Not everything is crap today; just the majority of it.

My only "must see" TV show that I watch every week is "The Closer" on TNT about the Los Angeles Police Department's homicide division, led by a female chief who arrived from Georgia (played by Kyra Sedgwick/Mrs. Kevin Bacon). It's a whodunnit but with humour.

It's a whole knew genre. Those of us * in the know ** call it a "whopunit"

* just me, to be fair. I'd lied with the "us" bit

** I also grossly exaggerated this bit.

It taught us never to go to Yorkshire.
One should absorb the colour of life, but one should never remember its details. Details are always vulgar. - Oscar Wilde, "The Picture of Dorian Gray"
